The first step in the life of the spirit is the renunciation of the life of the flesh. The life of the flesh is the life of the senses, the life of the separate self. The life of the spirit is the life of the soul, the life of the universal self. The life of the flesh is the life of appearance; the life of the spirit is the life of reality. The life of the flesh is the life of change; the life of the spirit is the life of changelessness. The life of the flesh is the life of time; the life of the spirit is the life of eternity. The life of the flesh is the life of death; the life of the spirit is the life of immortality. The life of the flesh is the life of duality; the life of the spirit is the life of unity.

The second step in the life of the spirit is the realization of the unity of the self with the universal self. The life of the spirit is the life of freedom; the life of the flesh is the life of bondage. The life of the spirit is the life of peace; the life of the flesh is the life of strife. The life of the spirit is the life of love; the life of the flesh is the life of hatred. The life of the spirit is the life of light; the life of the flesh is the life of darkness. The life of the spirit is the life of truth; the life of the flesh is the life of error. The life of the spirit is the life of joy.
